Community Based Initiatives for Reducing Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS Transmission in Manipur (CBIRDAT):

The Community Based Intervention to Reduce Drugs Abuse and Transmission of HIV/AIDS (CBIRDAT) project conducted 6 activities with a total of 20 activities during the third quarter (July to September) 2016 in the two targeted districts of Manipur viz: Churachandpur and Ukhrul.  Therefore, a total of 656 communities participated in the said program activities.
The following activities were conducted in the third quarter (July to September) 2016:

  • Workshop on identifying concrete measures to control and prevent HIV/AIDs and drug abuse and framing acceptable norms for the village development committee leaders
  • Social Action Groups (SAGs) conducted situation analysis at the project area level
  • Awareness building events like street/role-plays/folk arts in HIV/AIDS and Drug abuse in every project village
  • Health Camp
  • Training/workshop on Drug abuse and HIV/AIDS, government schemes, Networking
  • Exposure Visit for the Social Action Groups

Activity 1: Workshop on identifying concrete measures to control and prevent HIV/AIDs and drug
abuse and framin
g acceptable norms for the village development committee leaders
The program was designed to align responsibilities of the village level leaders in prevention of HIV transmission and drug abuse in their respective areas. Two programs were conducted in each of the districts.  Group exercises were carried out to identify the problems and introduce concrete measures to control and prevent on HIV/AIDS transmission and drug abuse. Thus, the village level leaders draft an acceptable norms, facilitated by the chiefs/chairman and SAGs leaders with the assistance of the project staffs.

 

 

 Activity 2: Social Action Groups (SAGs) conducted situation analysis at the project area level
The Program was to facilitate SAGs in sit uation analysis at their respective targeted areas. Two programs were conducted in each of the districts. The program focuses to strengthen the groups and owned up responsibilities in combating HIV transmission and drug abuse. During the third quarter of 2016, few SAGs have taken up measures in combating the issues in their respective villages.

Activity 3:  Awareness building events like street/role-plays/folk arts in HIV/AIDS and Drug abuse in every project village
With regards to the level of understanding of HIV/AIDS and Drug abuse at the village level, the program focus to create awareness in every project villages. The project introduces methodology of role plays/folk arts to encourage maximum number of participation in the program. The project witnessed community leaders and school children participating in the program.

Activity 4: Health Camp
In the third quarter of August (2016), Ukhrul District conducted a one day Health Camp for the infected and affected families, and also for the community in general. The camp was facilitated by Dr. Merachao, Chief Medical Officer, District Hospital of Ukhrul. General medicines with the prescription of the facilitator were distributed to the community. The project received medicine from Assam Rifles Battalion, Ukhrul Unit and District Hospital of Ukhrul.


Activity 5: Training/workshop on Drug abuse and HIV/AIDS, government schemes, networking
The workshop was conducted in each of the districts to create awarenes s on the facilities and scheme available in the government sector for community development especially for the vulnerable groups. The workshop was attended by various Non-government and government officers working in the different departments. As a result of the workshop, the project has build better rapport with the existing Non government Organization and few government departments.

 


Activity 6: Exposure Visit for Social Action Group
The Exposure for Social Action Groups was designed to provide opportunity for cross-learning and sharing of experiences within the project districts. Therefore, the Ukhrul SAGs group members visited Churachandpur District Hospital ART centre, Widows Group Association and North- East Food Bank.
